Summary: Tarbet lies on the west shore of Loch Lomond, Scotland, two-thirds of this way towards the northern end. Title source may be the Gaelic term Tairbeart, indicating esthmus, virtually, “draw-boat.” This comes from the fact that Loch Lomond at Tarbet lies just a mile and a half from Loch extended, a-sea loch, at Arrochar. The low area connecting Tarbet and Arrochar was used for portage of boats and frequented by Viking raiders who pulled longships involving the two allowing them to raid and plunder the shores and islands of Loch Lomond.
